Facebook’s privacy rollback is especially terrible because it’s so hard to reverse. Settings are so bewildering that even CEO Mark Zuckeberg has fiddled his two-to-three times this month. So here’s a guide to re-privatizing your profile.Ideally, we’d all be allowed to just accept Facebook’s recommended settings. But the social network is defaulting most people to share their private content widely with strangers, in an obvious bid to grow traffic and to compete more directly with Twitter. Then there’s the content the company is trying to take from you and make entirely public.
And, to borrow a phrase, what can’t be attributed to Facebook’s greed can be chalked up to ineptitude. Highly complex privacy schemes are bound to fail, as others have written, because most users don’t have the patience to sit and learn intricate details of various options. That would seemingly include Facebook co-founder Zuckerberg, who initially accepted the default options, according to published reports. But he soon altered these defaults to make them more private, hiding his photos from friends of friends.
And now it’s emerged in True/Slant that the CEO has also roped off his friends list and events calendar from strangers he has no friends in common with. (At least, he’s removed them from his profile page; Facebook’s official Privacy Policy still states that all friends lists are irrevocably public, and it’s not clear whether that’s been changed.)
If the CEO of Facebook is changing his default privacy settings, shouldn’t you? Here are some things you can do (click any image to enlarge):
Hide your photos (as much as possible).
Most people don’t seem to realize their old profile photos and albums are available to strangers The profile photos usually default to being shared widely, e.g. to “Everyone,” while the photo albums are often only slightly more restricted, e.g. “Friends of Friends.”
You can’t hide your current profile photos, but you can hide the others that you’ve uploaded. (UPDATE 1: The wording of this part was updated to make it clear that you can’t ever hide your main profile pic. So do, like, a picture of your cat or something. Or a building!)
From your Facebook home page, go to the Settings menu in the upper right corner, and select “Privacy Settings.” Then select “Profile Information.” Then scroll down to Photo Albums and click “Edit Settings”…
…and adjust to the level of privacy you are comfortable with (“Only Friends” was probably your setup before):
Hide other people’s photos of you (partly)
If someone “tags” one of their Facebook photos with your profile, it can show up on your profile. If you don’t want strangers (including “Friends of friends”) to get to conveniently peruse these often candid shots from your profile, go to Settings/Privacy Settings, then “Profile Information” and adjust “Photos and Videos of me.” We’d recommend “Only friends:”
UPDATE 1: To clarify, you can never remove pictures in which you are tagged from other people’s accounts, as we implied before. But by removing them from your profile, you make it a lot harder for strangers to find pictures of you that you might not want them to see.
Hide your birthday
It’s insane that Facebook recommended that many people share their birthday with “Friends of friends” in its defaults for the new “privacy” scheme. This personal information can be used by financial fraudsters to help impersonate you to your bank, credit card company, email provider and others. We’d recommend showing it to as few people as possible. Or, even better, set it to a false date.
Under Settings/Privacy Settings/Profile Information:
Hide your posts
Facebook is defaulting people to share their posts with “friends of friends,” i.e. strangers. You may want to revert this to share only with your friends. Under Settings/Privacy Settings/Profile Information:
Remove your friends list from your profile page
Facebook has updated its privacy policy to say that you can never permanently hide your friends list, and last week it was impossible to hide the list from friends of friends (see Felix Salmon’s second update here). This might be changing; on Monday, we couldn’t find a way to view the friends list of certain “friends of friends.”
In any case, it’s definitely possible to make your friends list harder for strangers to view, by removing it from your profile. Go to your Facebook home page, then click on “Profile” in the top right corner to view your profile.
Then scroll down to the section of the profile that shows your friends (titled “Friends”), and click the pencil symbol in the upper left corner. This will reveal a checkbox to hide your friend list from some strangers, at least on your profile page:
UPDATE: We’re getting “corrections” on this telling us exactly what we already said above, so we’ll repeat it in bold: this does not completely shield your friends list. Friends of friends can reportedly still see it, for example, and as we said above Facebook considers it public information.
Hide your profile from search engines
Facebook is touchy about this one, because it’s always displayed some data for search engines, by default, and suddenly people are noticing. That’s why when you go to change your settings under Settings/Privacy Settings/Search, Facebook now pops up this ultra-defensive dialog:
What Facebook doesn’t tell you is that it now offers a link to “View Such and Such’s Friends” from the public, search-engine-indexable profile page. At least, that’s what ours does. At the very least, you should look at your search engine page using the preview link under “Public Search Results” and see if you want to continue to make it available:
Hide your info from friends’ apps (UPDATE 1)
This is a big one we missed the first time around — by default, your friends can share huge amounts of your personal information with applications they authorize, like quizzes and games. It would be a good idea to restrict this even if Facebook weren’t sloppy about policing its apps and partners; as things stand, we’d recommend unsharing most if not all types of data from your friends’ apps. (Thanks to the commenter and tipsters who sent this in.)
Go to Settings/Privacy Settings, then “Applications and Websites,” then “What your friends can share about you – Edit Settings:”

Ora, aprite firefox, andate ‘Impostazioni’, ‘Greasemonkey’, ‘Userscript Commands…’ ed infine ‘Customise facebook colours…’. Selezionate il colore che vi piace di più ed avete fatto. Potete andare su facebook e vedere il nuovo stile.

[TRUCCHI] Scoprire password facebook sul computer

Chi utilizza sistemi Windows sa benissimo che quando viene digitata una password, sia essa in Facebook, Myspace, Msn o qualunque sito web o programma, al posto delle lettere che la compongono, sullo schermo compaiono dei pallini neri. Questi pallini sono molto più sicuri degli asterischi, infatti software come PasswordRevelator permettonevano di “tradurre” gli asterischi nella password da essi nascosta.
L’avvento dei pallini ha bloccato questa possibilità, ma non è più così: è uscito SpySharp!
Simuliamo un recupero password su facebook:
- Scaricate e installate spysharp
- Sul vostro pc qualcuno ha usato Facebook (o altri siti o addirittura software) e la password è rimasta memorizzata sotto forma di asterischi, allora:
- aprite Spysharp
- selezionate la scheda “web”
- trascinate il “mirino” col mouse sui pallini da decifrare
Ecco il risultato:
La password è rivelata!
Ricordate: se usate spysharp su siti web, usate Internet explorer,perchè con firefox non Funziona, riguardo la compatibilità con altri browser sono gradite segnalazioni.

[TRUCCHI] Inserire Google maps sul profilo

Per la serie per applicazioni Facebook segnaliamo l’uscita di una nuova app che consente di avere sul proprio profilo una mappa in stile Google maps che segnala dove abitiamo, o meglio il punto esatto dove ci troviamo in quel momento, e farlo sapere a tutti i nostri amici inserendola nel nostro profilo.
Si chiama Use a map e per installarla basta seguire il link, effettuare il ogin su Facebook, ed attendere il caricamento della mappa, non fate nulla prima che si sia caricata la mappa perchè potrebbe bloccarsi! A questo punto segnate un punto sulla cartina, date un nome (non visibile a nessuno) alla vostra mappa e premete save map. Abilitate l’applicazione dal menu Account>>Impostazione Applicazioni e Google Maps sarà nel vostro profilo Facebook.

Facebook account disabilitato. Ed ora?

Molti utenti Facebook sono già incappati nella disabilitazione dell’account, molti altri, non essendo a conoscenza del perchè un account può essere sospeso o eliminato, sono a rischio. In questa guida daremo chiarimenti sui motivi (e sono tanti) per cui Facebook può chiudere l’account di un utente e, d’altra parte le regole da seguire per evitare che ciò avvenga, partiamo con l’elencare le cause:
- Ci si è iscritti utilizzando un nome falso, certo, per verificarlo non verrà mai nessuno a chiedervi la carta d’identità, ma quei nomi e cognomi tipo:”Ales Sandra”, “Pinco Pallino”, etc.. sono sicuramente account a rischio.
- Ci si è iscritti a un numero eccessivo di gruppi (il numero massimo non si sa…)
- Sono stati inviati troppi messaggi uguali a più utenti dello stesso gruppo (excessive evangelism lo chiamano…) in realtà pare che basti mandare solo due messaggi identici a due utenti diversi e si è fuori.
- Si è scritto su troppe bacheche, anche qui non è dato un numero massimo
- Si hanno oltre cinquemila amici
- Troppi Poke
- Si è fatta pubblicità con messaggi nelle bacheche altrui
- Ci si è iscritti pur non essendo una persona (es.: “Discoteca Taldeitali”, “Palestra Muscolazzi”, “Azienda Blablabla”….)
- Sono state svolte attività illegali su Facebook
- Si è minorenni
- Sono stati inseriti contenuti offensivi
Dunque se uno o più di questi status o comportamenti vi si addicono, state attenti perchè quelli del nostro amato social network non fanno sconti, e per poter farsi riabilitare l’account dovrete piangere in serbocroato, ma a parte gli scherzi, vediamo come comportarsi se il nostro account è stato chiuso e lo rivogliamo indietro:
Inviate una mail ad abuse@facebook.com e spiegare (in inglese) che non siete malintenzionati, che avete sempre rispettato le regole e che questa volta è stat solo una svista, chiedete scusa e pregateli di riattivare il vostro account, se entro qualche giorno non ricevete risposte positive o negative, riprovate a mandare una mail, stavolta a: appeals@facebook.com e ripetete il procedimento, se siete fortunati vi riattiveranno l’account e lo riavrete così com’era, senza perdere Album, applicazioni, amici, gruppi, etc…, se invece Facebook non vi risponde o vi dice che nel vostro caso la riattivazione non è possibile, l’unica cosa da fare è arrendersi, e magari riiscriversi da cap.

Oggi vi spieghiamo un altro modo per mettere musica sul vostro profilo facebook, un pò come succede già da tempo su Myspace. Questa possibilità ci è offerta dagli amici del blog urlmp3video.blogspot.com. Visitando il link avrete a disposizione un infinità di collegamenti gratuiti a canzoni di ogni tipo facilmente reperibili utilizzando il form di ricerca che troverete sulla destra.
una volta ottenuto il link della nostra canzone preferita, ad esempio: http://www.un-sito-a-caso.com/canzone.mp3 apriamo la nostra pagina facebook e nello spazio “A cosa stai pensando?” non scriviamo niente, ma quando ci clicchiamo su con il mouse per far lampeggiare il cursore, vedremo che in basso si aprirà l’icona “link”:
cliccando su di essa potrete inserire il link alla nostra canzone, poi cliccate “Allega” ed il gioco è fatto, da ora in poi chiunque potrà ascoltare il brano direttamente dalla vostra pagina facebook.

[TRUCCHI] Scegliere amici sulla box amici

Nella vostra pagina di facebook, in basso a sinistra vi è il box contenente gli amici, che, come avrete notato cambiano ogni volta che visitate la pagina perchè i sei spazi disponibili vengono occupati alternativamente da 6 tra i vostri amici scelti a caso. Facebook, nel caso non ve ne siate già accorti, consente di scegliere i sei, nove o dodici amici da mostrare ad ogni visualizzazione del profilo, così quando voi o vostri amici visiterete il pofilo vedrete sempre le stesse facce.
Come funziona:
Cliccate sul simbolo della matita sopra il box e scegliete quanti amici dovranno essere visualizzati, nella riga immediatamente sotto digitate uno ad uno i nomi delle persone che volete compaiano nel box “Amici” sul vostro profilo, è inoltre possibile spuntando l’apposito checkbox, abilitare la visualizzazione dei networks (reti) ai quali i vostri amici appartengano.

Non farsi trovare nella ricerca di facebook

Molti utenti Facebook hanno scelto di non farsi “vedere” da chi non è loro amico, questi utenti sono di fatto invisibili al pubblico e non è possibile trovarli nè facendo una ricerca, ne cercando tra la lista degli amici di qualunque loro friend. L’impostazione di privacy che permette tutto ciò è chiamata “di ricerca” ed è una delle impostazioni più sicure che Facebook mette a disposizione, in quanto consente di avere un profilo solo per gli amici, per tutti gli altri non ci sarà alcuna traccia di noi sul social network, nelle reti e nei gruppi.
Vediamo come applicare questa impostazione per non farsi trovare su Facebook:
accedete al menu in alto a destra: Impostazioni>>Impostazioni sulla privacy
verrà visualizzata la schermata in figura, cliccate su Ricerca, a questo punto, nel menu a tendina chiamato “Visibilità nella ricerca” selezionate Solo amici.
Cliccate Salva modifiche ed il gioco è fatto, nessuno, eccetto i vostri amici saprà che siete iscritti a Facebook.
Riflessione: Questa impostazione è molto utile ai fini della tutela della privacy, ma è un po’ “stonata” nel contesto di Facebook, infatti una volta attivata non potremo più ricevere richieste d’amicizia in quanto ogni potenziale nuovo amico non potrà vederci da nessuna parte per cliccare “aggiungi agli amici” e non ci consentirà di ritrovare ex compagni di scuola o vecchi amici, a meno che non siamo noi a trovare loro.
